Writing Challenge: June 28, 2018
Prompt: Write a short story that begins with “It’s beautiful, but…”
“It’s beautiful but isn’t it a bit cliché?” I held the bouquet of roses half-heartedly to my nose.
“I know, but this is what boyfriends are supposed to do right? Buy flowers and take you out to nice dinners and shit.” He didn’t look at me or the flowers in my hand.
“Well, I guess that’s what they do in the movies, but we don’t have to do that stuff.” I toyed with some of the crimson petals watching my fingernails leave dark bruises in their delicate flesh. “I mean, I appreciate it, but I like you when you’re being you- you know?”
“Really? I thought that now that we were dating you’d want me to do all that romantic stuff.”
“It’s nice sometimes, but I want to make our own kind of romantic stuff- stuff that we like. Stuff that’s more like us.”
“More like us, huh?”
“Yeah. I mean, these are beautiful, but I liked that dandelion you picked for me at the park a lot more.”
