Childhood Storm

Writing Challenge: Aug 14, 2018

Prompt: Write about a thunderstorm through the eyes of a 5 year old child.

The rain pounds on the tin room with the weight of a drum, but tings like bells. Thunder rolls and cracks through the air- sometimes so loudly the windows rattle in the panes behind the bed. Lightning brightens the room through the bay windows as we all sit on Mom’s bed watching water flood the yard outside.

We are safe here.

The winds blow the branches outside the window threateningly.

We are safe here.

The lightning knocked out the power again.

We are safe here.

The thunder is nearly deafening as it cracks through the humid air.

We are safe here.

It’s been raining for days: everything is dark and muddy.

We are safe here.

I can’t be afraid when we are all together, playing cards, on Mom’s big bed.
