NaNoWriMo 2-Week Check-In

We are now 14 days into National Novel Writing Month. How am I fairing in the annual challenge? I’d say, about as expected.

I was upfront with you all that I would be cheating. I didn’t start a new novel from scratch, and I know myself well enough to know that setting a hard-word limit on myself would backfire. So, I made my goal to form a writing habit and finish my novel by the end of the month. If I happen to meet the more traditional goals in the meantime, well, that’s great!

2 weeks in, I can honestly say that I’m cruising along as expected. By “as expected” I mean that my average word count is around 800, and I’ve missed a few days of writing (though in my defense, I was really sick- so I give myself a semi-pass on those 3 days). Honestly though, I am proud of these fledgling steps. This is the most consistent writing I have done on my own. I actually believe I can finish my novel this month. I see the finish line in sight!

What have I accomplished?
I’ve drafted my novel completely, and broken down the final scenes I want to add. I’ve delved deeper into my characters and have (hopefully) made them more complex and 3-dimensional. I ended up creating more complicated relationships between my protagonists (there are 2 main) and the other characters, and I finally decided how I want the inciting incident, the 2nd inciting incident, and the final climax to lead into the conclusion. Basically, I have a rough draft.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a long way to go. There are still several scenes to write and a lot of wrinkles to iron out. As a first novel I have no expectations that this will be good or ever see the publication press. I still plan to go through the revision, beta-reading, and editing process in hopes that this novel does reach the shelves, but completing it at all will be an amazing personal accomplishment.

If any of you are also doing NaNoWriMo, keep at it! We are halfway there, and no matter where you are in your personal journey be proud of what you’ve done.

Thank you all for checking in on me! I know I’ve not been posting much, but I’ve been putting the novel first. I hope to find some time to check in with you again next week. In the meantime, Happy Writing!
