I adopted my pet when I was 24.
We always had family pets growing up, but Aspasia is the first pet I can truly call mine. She came into my life when I was at my lowest, when my depression was evolving into a mixed-manic episode that would push me past the edge of sanity. If it wasn’t for that little black cat, I don’t know if I could have come back. She’s why I’m still here today.
Companionship is lifesaving.
If loneliness is an epidemic, companionship is a panacea. No one wants to go through the world alone, but not everyone if fortunate enough to have human friends or family. Human emotions are complex, and relationships are even more so. But the bond between a person and their pet is not. While an animal can’t offer you life advice, they can offer you their company and their love. That act alone can save a life.
My family has grown in recent years.
My fiance and another kitty has increased our family from two to four. After years together, our bond is stronger than ever. Now we have two other family members to share our home. Every morning I recognize how lucky I am to love and be loved by my partner, my family, and my friends. And I have that today because of the love of one little cat.
