*Dedicated to my Grandfather
I saw my future in hazel eyes
misty with confusion of decades gone by.
The past and the present all intertwined.
Getting lost in the mess of a disorganized mind.
I saw my future in a heartbroken face.
Creases of love and laughter all replaced
with fear of abandonment as memories, erased
the person that once was.
I saw my future in shaking hands
knotted and scarred from a lifetime of wear.
Hands that learned, then led, created, and cared
now clumsy and stiff beyond use.
I saw my future in a life well-lived
full of family and stories and experiences.
A life of meaning that won’t fade away
even if you do.
I saw my future in you.
